What is occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) focuses on helping people across the lifespan function to the best of their abilities in their everyday activities. For a baby, their "occupations" or meaningful activities of daily living include: connecting with caregivers, feeding, sleeping, exploring their environment, playing, and more.

Pediatric occupational therapists have pursued continuing education to in infant development and /or feeding. They typically possess in-depth knowledge of the infant's body, reflexes, motor skills, oral motor skills, sensory processing, positioning, and feeding. OT's will listen to your concerns, assess current level of functioning, problem solve with you, set goals, and give you the knowledge and tools needed to be successful in activities of daily living.

What is feeding therapy?

Feeding therapy focuses on making the process of feeding easier, safer, and more pleasurable. Therapists can be either an occupational therapist or speech therapist who has specialized training in feeding and swallowing. Therapists use their knowledge of anatomy and physiology, oral motor skills, reflexes, sensory processing, and positioning to help guide individualized treatment. Feeding therapy goals promote safety, nutrition, growth and enjoyment during feeding experiences.

What is an IBCLC?

IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. It is considered the highest certification for professionals in the lactation profession.  It requires 90 hours of lactation-specific education and 300-1,000 hands-on clinical hours followed by passing a challenging board examination. IBCLCs are unique professionals that assess and treat two patients simultaneously as both the mother and baby are interdependent for breastfeeding.

Do I need to complete any forms before my visit?

Yes, once we have scheduled your appointment, you will receive an email with your consent and intake forms. Please add that email address to your safe list so future emails will not be lost in your junk folder.  I ask that in order for me to best prepared for our time together, that you have all intake forms completed 24 hours prior to your appointment.

How should I prepare for my initial consultation?

If your baby is sleeping, please let them sleep. It can be helpful for me to see how they wake and what typically happens leading up to a feeding.  I would like baby to be ready to eat within 20 minutes of my arrival, so please try to adjust prior feeding times so baby will be wanting to eat while I am there. Call me if you don't think your baby is not going to wait for me to get there to feed and we can decide how much of a snack to offer based on timing. Have any feeding equipment that you have been using available and ready to use (i.e. bottles, nipple shield, SNS, pillows, pump). Please have animals put away so they will not be in the area we are working.

What areas do you serve?

Argyle, Bartonville, Copper Canyon, Double Oak, Flower Mound, Highland Village, Justin, Keller, Lantana, Northlake, Roanoke, Southlake, Trophy Club, & surrounding areas.

Additional travel fee may be applicable for visits more than a 15 minute drive away from home office.
